1603 Elizabeth I of England dies. James VI of Scotland becomes James I of England.
1610 James VI creates a new Protestant bishop of Whithorn. The old cathedral nave become the bishop’s church.
About 1630 Whithorn’s church is adapted for an Anglican style of worship.
1640s Civil war in Scotland and England.
1649 Bishops removed from the Church of Scotland. English-style worship ends at Whithorn. 1650 Oliver Cromwell defeats the Scots at the Battle of Dunbar.
1660s Charles II appoints a new bishop of Whithorn. 1660s–1680s Charles II attempts to control the Church of Scotland, appointing bishops and expelling objecting ministers.
1689 The bishop of Whithorn is removed from office. Worship continues in the old nave of Whithorn Cathedral. 1688 Catholic James VII flees into exile in France, replaced by Protestant William and Mary.
1707 Treaties of Union passed in Scotland and England.
1820 Work begins on a new parish church for Whithorn, replacing the old medieval building. 1822 King George IV visits Scotland, the first reigning monarch in Scotland since Charles II (1650).
1890 The Third Marquis of Bute funds excavations at Whithorn priory. The Latinus Stone is discovered.
