the priory

archaeology

Early-to-mid 1970s excavations

In 1972, attention shifted from the priory site to the Glebe Field and a market garden to the south-west.

A surprising wealth of material was found, possibly dating back to the early Christian period. Among the most important discoveries was a curving ditch, part of the eighth century monastery.

Further excavation in 1975 uncovered the foundations of the north cloister range in a small field beside the existing parish church.
