Whithorn Priory

Explore the ruined site of the first church in Scotland.

The Priory

A peacefully quiet air hangs over the ruins of Whithorn Priory. The fragments that remain only hint at the original scale and grandeur of the monastery.

Pass beneath the lime-washed gatehouse at the Pend and you take the same path as King James IV, who walked from Edinburgh to pray at Saint Ninian’s tomb in March 1507.

Enter the gloom of the priory crypts to trace the footsteps of Robert the Bruce, who came to Whithorn in 1329 seeking a cure for his illness.
